Indigo Child is a small, independent, one-woman led crochet & knit apparel brand based in Manchester. Our Founder, Sarah, started the brand in 2019 after years of studying the fashion industry, and seeing the effects that bad practices can have on our planet.

'As a one-woman business based in the UK, I take pride in handcrafting every product with care and intention. I exclusively source 100% vegan-friendly yarns and threads, making sure that every material aligns with my commitment to protecting animals and the planet. By focusing on eco-conscious choices and ethical craftsmanship, I aim to make a positive impact while offering beautiful, sustainable products.' Sarah Wakeham, Founder & CEO

How our products are made

It takes a while...

Every product we create is a labour of love, taking 1-3 months to create and perfect. Our process begins with our founder and designer, Sarah, who develops a new concept, creates 2 or 3 prototypes to refine the design, and ensures the final product meets our high standards. Once perfected, we produce multiple colour ways of the design before listing it in our shop. All of our items are hand crocheted or knitted, meaning each piece takes anywhere from 1 to 30 hours to create, depending on its intricacy. Each item is one of a kind, made with the highest attention to detail and built to last, ensuring that our pieces don't end up in landfill.

Who makes our product

All our pieces are made in the UK, with the majority of products handcrafted by me, Sarah. For smaller items like accessories and homeware, my partner Jaiden occasionally lends a hand. We take pride in being transparent about who makes our products and how they are made, a value that sets us apart from fast fashion companies. Unlike large industries that often hide their practices, we make sure to pay our team a fair and liveable wage. By making everything ourselves, we avoid shipping and long-distance logistics, reducing petrol use and minimising our environmental impact.

How we help the planet

One step at a time

Our small business is committed to helping the planet through thoughtful, sustainable practices. We use 100% recyclable bags for our larger packages, and cardboard boxes for our smaller items. We operate as a zero-waste brand, repurposing all scrap and excess yarn that's used to create our products, and make them into product tag strings or use as stuffing for pillows and home decor. All our yarns are vegan-friendly, including high-quality options like Stylecraft, Paintbox, King Cole, and Hobbii cottons and acrylics. By prioritising sustainability at every step, we ensure our products are as kind to the planet as they are beautiful.

Acrylic Yarn

We are committed to using materials that are both high-quality and responsibly sourced. Our acrylic yarns come from trusted brands like Stylecraft, Paintbox Yarns, and King Cole, all of which are vegan-friendly. Stylecraft and Paintbox Yarns are produced in Turkey, while King Cole yarn is proudly made in the UK. All our suppliers adhere to the Oeko-Tex Standard, which ensures that the yarns are sustainably manufactured and regularly tested to minimize environmental impact, helping to protect the planet for future generations. Additionally, Stylecraft and King Cole yarns meet the EN71-3 standard, making them safe for a variety of uses. These yarns are incredibly soft, making them an excellent choice for anyone with sensitivities to certain materials.

Cotton Yarn

Our cotton yarns, sourced from Hobbii and Yarn and Colors, are plant-based, vegan-friendly, and responsibly made. Hobbii yarn, manufactured in India, is OEKO-TEX certified and dyed using vegan processes, ensuring it meets high environmental and ethical standards. Yarn and Colors yarn, made in the Netherlands, is certified to OEKO-TEX Class 1, EN71-3, and ANNEX II standards, reflecting its safety and eco-conscious manufacturing. These cotton yarns are lightweight, breathable, durable, and absorbent, making them a fantastic natural fiber choice for a wide range of projects.

Its soft, breathable nature makes it perfect for crafting high-quality, sustainable products while meeting our commitment to ethical materials.
